11 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Videographer

Written by Ioan Gwyn

Choosing your wedding videographer is an important task - here are 11 questions you can ask potential suppliers to make sure that you get the perfect video of your wedding!

1. Are you available on our wedding date?

This one is obvious - a lot of videographers are booked months in advance. Some may be even fully booked for a whole 12 months. Find out if they are available before asking any other questions.

2. How many weddings have you filmed?

Experience is an important factor when booking a videographer. You will want a film that you can watch back on your 10th anniversary and beyond. Also the more experience your videographer has, the more examples they have to show you of their work.

3. Can we see a Full-Length example of one of your weddings?

This is a great way to see if the videographer is the one for you. It can also work as a springboard for ideas for your own film - like something you see? Tell your videographer.

4. How would you describe your style?

Cinematic, traditional, documentary or a mix. Wedding films come in many styles, and it’s up to you to research these styles and decide what kind of film you’d like, and to see if your videographer can execute this.

5. Have you worked at our venue before?

Similarly to our tips about photographers - a videographer that has shot at your venue in the past will know the best places to film and any restrictions or challenges the venue provides. If they haven’t been to your venue before, organise a meeting with them and the venue co-ordinator.

6. Have you worked with our photographer before?

Your wedding videographer and photographer work closely together as they’re both tasked with capturing the key moments of your wedding without getting in each other’s way. This won’t be an issue with wedding professionals but it’s always good to know if your suppliers have worked together before, as they may have examples of their work together and a good rapport.

7. What exactly is our money getting us?

Find out a full rundown of what your video package includes. Don’t forget to ask about the final product (Is there a guaranteed length? Will we get a USB? Will it be in HD/4K?) and the videographer themselves (How many hours will you be there? Will there be an assistant?). Get everything you need in writing before you sign the contract.

8. How long does it take for you to edit the video?

No-one wants to be waiting months and months to watch their wedding video. Ask your videographer how long it will take to deliver the first draft of your video, as well as how long any potential changes to the video will take. Also you could ask them about smaller snippets, perfect for social media, to keep you occupied while they’re editing the full-length video.

9. Are changes to the video possible after the first edit?

Your videographer will most likely spend a number of days editing your video, so you don’t want to ask your videographer to make big edits after presenting the final product. It’s best to ask to see a rough draft of the video so you can make any suggestions. Always check if any changes in the edit incur an additional cost.

10. Can you do Aerial Filming?

Filming with a drone is a really popular way to get shots over your venue and to get some fantastic views. If drone photography or videography is something you really want, find a videographer that is a certified drone pilot or has a lot of experience.

11. Do you incur any extra costs?

On top of a change of location from the ceremony to the reception, do they charge travel costs? Do they need food? Is there an over-time charge? Clear these up with your videographer before your wedding so you’re not met with a surprise bill!
