5 Tips for Choosing Wedding Music & Entertainment

Written by The Function Hub

Entertainment has become a very important element of a lot of people’s wedding day experience. With a countless number of entertainment options available, it is sometimes difficult to know if you’ve picked the right Band or DJ for your big day.

Here are some key points to consider when booking entertainment for your wedding.

1. Time of Day

Some couples will opt for entertainment for their ceremony as well as the reception and the evening party – Some ideas for daytime entertainment would include string quartets, acoustic guitarists, pianists, and harpists. These types of performers can really set the mood that you are looking for.

Most soloists will have a wide ‘repertoire’ (set of songs) which will include pieces with plenty of emotion for the ceremony, and upbeat background music for the drinks reception.

For the party, there are two main options – A band or a DJ. The type of entertainment you have in the evening will rely on budget, venue, and personal preference which we will cover later on.

A band in the evening has been a staple of the wedding industry for many years – it is the perfect way to end the night for any live music fans out there.

DJs are a bit more customisable – not all bands will be able to play every single one of your favourite songs, but a DJ has access to a huge number of songs to ensure that everyone’s favourites get played.

Some bands will provide a DJ-style playlist option which allows for customisation to give you an all-in-one bespoke wedding entertainment package.

2. Make it Personal

There are countless ways to make wedding entertainment personal to you on your big day. You could do this by asking the performers you hire to play a certain song – a live first dance perhaps, or a song that means a lot to you and your family.

You may have a feeling that you need to cater to every single wedding guest’s music taste. While having a wide variety of songs is a good thing for everyone, remember it’s your big day so you can have anything you want!

3. Budget

Different levels of entertainment cost different amounts of money. There are many performers at a number of price ranges, but generally speaking, the more performers you want, the more it’s going to cost. The fee for entertainment is usually negotiable and depends on a number of factors like travel distance, added extras (first dance, DJ set), and quality.

4. Venue

Make sure that your venue is suitable for the type of music you would like.

Want a huge 10-piece band? Make sure there’s a big enough stage area.

Want the loudest wedding band in the country? They won’t be able to turn it up to 11 if the venue has a sound limiter.

Most bands are willing to work something out to ensure that you still get your first-choice performers, so send them a message to see what you can work out.

5. Have Fun

The most important element of wedding entertainment is the entertainment part – bands and DJs are there to ensure that you and your guests have a good time, which in its turn makes the night much more memorable (for the right reasons!).

So pick an exciting band or DJ to play some of your favourite tunes, so that you can relax and unwind after a very long day!
