How Many People Can Attend My Wedding?
Written by I.G. - Information Correct as of 07/07/21
Update: 21/06/21:
On the 17th of May, Wales was put in Alert Level 2 - https://gov.wales/alert-level-2-frequently-asked-questions
On the 21st of June, it was announced that wedding, civil partnership receptions or wakes can take place in regulated premises like hotels. The number of people is limited by venue size and a risk assessment.
The maximum number for guests does not include:
Children under 11
Carers
Venue Staff
Wedding Suppliers (Entertainment, Bands, Photographers etc.)
If you are having a wedding at a private dwelling:
indoors – only members of the household or extended household can gather; or
outdoors – up to 30 people (whether or not from the same household) not counting carers of persons attending or children under 11 provided that all attending are from no more than 30 households.
What about a marquee?
If they are closed on all sides and roof/ceiling they are considered as an internal environment, and should be treated as such. In contrast if they are open-sided (or more than 50% open as per the Smoke-Free Premises and Vehicles (Wales) Regulations 2020) they are to be considered and treated as an external environment.
The government is able to move up and down alert levels in single steps depending on vaccine rollout. The Welsh Government will continue to review the situation weekly - follow us on Instagram or like our page on Facebook to get the latest updates.
Covid-19 Weddings in Wales - 2021.
Information Correct as of 07/07/21
Wales was placed in Alert Level 4 from 6.00 pm on 19 December 2020, this was in the light of the health advice pointing to the very serious risks posed by the new variant of coronavirus. According to the Welsh Government, this new variant poses a much greater risk of transmission and it is particularly important to take all steps available to avoid any risks of people being exposed to the virus or spreading the virus.
The general advice is that people should stay at home except for very limited purposes and not socially mix with people they do not live with. Those who are extremely vulnerable should take extra precautions to minimise their contact with others.
We’d like to remind you that the guidelines mentioned in this post are subject to change, and we suggest that you check the Welsh Government website for updated guidelines before making any decisions on your wedding.
Can I Get Married?
The answer is: yes, you can get married if you want to. However, it is up to couples to decide whether or not they want to get married under the current circumstances, with a number of guidelines in place to ensure the safety of those who attend is the most important thing.
Before making a decision on your wedding we suggest that you head over to the Welsh Government website to read the full guidance, but here are some of the main points:
Masks
According to gov.wales - “face coverings must be worn by everyone over the age of 11 in indoor public places.” However, there are some exceptions - “The couple do not need to wear a face covering during the walk down the aisle, the vows, the first kiss, and photos taken indoors.” and there are a limited number of exceptional circumstances where you would not need to wear a mask - they can be found here.
How many people can attend?
The easiest way to make sure that you have the space to ensure 2 metres between households is to limit the number of people who may attend.
According to the Welsh Government, as the “ceremony itself must take place indoors, it is the capacity of the building or room (once physical distancing measures are taken into account) which will determine the size of the invitation list and therefore the numbers who can gather”. This means that the number of people you can invite depends on the size of the building where the ceremony takes place, ensuring that correct distancing measures are in place. Who can attend?
There are a number of things that would mean that certain people would not be able to attend your wedding. These are stated on the Welsh Government website as follows:
“Those experiencing coronavirus symptoms listed below should not attend:
new continuous cough
high temperature
loss of or change to your normal sense of smell or taste (anosmia)
Those who have received a notification from NHS Wales Test, Trace, Protect that they need to self-isolate because they have tested positive for COVID-19 or been in close contact with someone who has tested positive, must not attend. And those who are from a household that is self-isolating must not attend.”
Travelling
In terms of getting to the ceremony venue, there are a number of guidelines to ensure that households do not mix on the way to and from the wedding.
“There are no restrictions on travel within Wales to attend a wedding ceremony or reception, if permitted within the specific Alert Level. Invited guests may travel into Wales to attend a wedding ceremony or formation of civil partnership.”
Can I have a wedding reception?
Yes. Wedding, civil partnership receptions or wakes can take place in regulated premises like hotels. The number of people is limited by venue size and a risk assessment.
